Insights from the SCDM 2024 annual conference
Clinical data science is an essential part of developing therapies. The Society for Clinical Data Management (SCDM) is one of the key global organizations for clinical data. Attending the four-day SCDM annual conference in Boston, Massachusetts, was a rewarding experience for me and my Catalyst Flex colleagues.
The conference was filled with innovative ideas and forward-thinking discussions. As a member of the Catalyst Flex data management team, I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge and connect with other industry professionals. Many of the sessions highlighted the future of clinical data management and how we can leverage these advancements to enhance Catalyst Flex services.
Standout sessions and key takeaways
Several sessions stood out to me, particularly those focusing on risk-based monitoring (RBM), making data entry easier for sites through EMR to EDC integration, and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical trials.
Two main topics dominated the conference: risk-based monitoring (RBM) and artificial intelligence (AI). These areas are pivotal in shaping the future of clinical trials.
Risk-based monitoring
Supported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, RBM is revolutionizing how we monitor clinical trials. RBM focuses on the most critical data and processes in drug development. The discussions about RBM highlighted the cost savings and efficiency gains. While the initial investment might be significant, the long-term benefits in terms of data quality and patient safety are substantial.
Using RBM can help enhance data quality and help improve patient safety while also reducing costs. Catalyst Flex works with many sponsors who utilize RBM. Engaging with conference tracks about RBM’s benefits and implementation strategies always helps us better support our clients who choose to incorporate it in a study.
Clinical trial data integration
Simplifying data entry for clinical trial sites is crucial. Integrating electronic health records (EHR) with electronic data capture (EDC) systems streamlines the process, reducing errors and saving time.
Catalyst Flex is agnostic in our approach to EHR and EDC systems, which helps support our clients based on their needs rather than one specific technology. Supporting EHR to EDC processes is something we provide to sites and sponsors. Our experience in this area helps us expand our offerings and improve efficiency for our clients. The SCDM held several discussions around best practices and innovative approaches.
Artificial intelligence
Sessions on harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) are ubiquitous at any conference. AI’s potential to revolutionize clinical trials was a recurring theme throughout. From automating routine tasks to providing predictive analytics, AI can significantly enhance trial efficiency. Staying informed about these advancements ensures proper integration.
AI can transform clinical trials through data automation, data analysis, predicting outcomes, and identifying potential issues before they arise.
While embracing AI can lead to more efficient and effective trials, data management professionals need to ensure we balance the convenience of AI applications with the privacy and regulatory needs inherent in any clinical data. AI is truly revolutionizing our industry and the conference supported professionals learning more about its benefits and pitfalls.
On the final day of the conference, I attended Cultivating Your People: Fostering Opportunities for Personal and Professional Growth in Data Management. This session emphasized the importance of continuous learning and development, something Catalyst already excels at through our Lunch and Learn sessions and company-wide meetings that include learning components.
An engaging, memorable conference
Although all of SCDM was fantastic, including seeing colleagues from around the world, for me the most memorable moments were interacting with vendors and experiencing product demos related to AI. These interactions provided a glimpse into the future of clinical trials and how AI and RBM will evolve. Embracing these technologies will be crucial as we move into what is being termed the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Being part of this transformation is both exciting and inspiring.
